A-7 dual carriageway to get a third lane

ARCHIVED ARTICLE -

The work will be focused on the Crevillente-Orihuela stretch for now, but parts of Murcia could soon undergo road widening works too

A-7 dual carriageway to get a third lane
Spain’s Ministry of Transport has put out to tender the construction of a third lane of traffic on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo road in Alicante, in the area where it borders on the Region of Murcia.

The General Directorate of Roads published the project to widen the roadway of the Autovía del Mediterráneo in the section between Crevillente and Orihuela, which has a budget of just over 94 million euros, in the Official State Gazette (BOE) on Tuesday September 19.

The work is limited to just a 17-kilometre stretch of the A-7, despite the fact that many parts of Murcia have also been waiting several decades for the widening of this road, given that this dual carriageway crosses the major metropolitan areas of Murcia capital city and Lorca.

In the area closest to the city of Murcia, which has the greatest influx of vehicles, the third lane was connected to the construction of the Arco Norte, which should move the connection between the A-7 and the A-30 away from the junction of the shopping centres.

The Minstry said, “The objective of this action is to increase the capacity from two to three lanes on each side of the dual carriageway” from Crevillente to the Orihuela junction with Benferri.

They added that this work gives “continuity to the previous section, between Elche and Crevillente, which has already had three lanes on each carriageway since 2008.”

The project has even appeared in the General State Budget in previous years, but until now has not been put out to tender.
