Further evidence continues to emerge that the Region of Murcia is escaping the worst of the fourth wave of coronavirus infection which has seen incidence rates soar in various of the country’s 17 regions, and the latest update on Thursday afternoon (providing figures up to midnight on Wednesday) again reports fewer than 100 new confirmed cases.
Of the 86 new cases (the same figure as the day before), 29 were reported in the municipality of Murcia, 11 in Cartagena, 7 in Alcantarilla, 5 in Lorca, 4 in each of Alhama de Murcia and Mazarrón and 3 in Molina de Segura, and the positives were the result of a total of 2,839PCR tests being carried out: this represents a low positivity rate of 3.02 per cent.
However, while the situation remains largely under control in the Region there are also grounds for concern. Although the number of Covid patients receiving hospital treatment and those in intensive care both dropped, to 72 and 15 respectively, over the last three days the number of active cases known in Murcia has increased from 513 to 619.
At the same time, the death of an 89-year-old man on Wednesday took the total of Covid-related fatalities in the Region of Murcia since the pandemic reached Spain to 1,589.
