ARCHIVED - Aemet not expecting further torrential rains during September
This week Murcia will remain dry and warm
During September it’s normal for episodes of heavy storms to occur in Spain following the baking hot summers.
Along the Mediterranean coastline these can translate into torrential downpours should the climatic conditions create favourable combinations of weather fronts, the most commonly associated with the autumn in Spain being that the Mediterranean sea is warmer, so condenses readily, combined with the arrival of a cold front moving down across Spain (Depressions at High Levels: DANA). This combination can result in the type of storm which hit large areas of Spain last week, just brushing the edge of the region and creating the flooding experienced in Águilas on Thursday.
This week the weather once again returns to more stable, hotter conditions but Aemet does not foresee any indications that similar episodes will be repeated within the next three weeks, given the current data available, according to regional paper La Opinión.
The paper recognises that Aemet is reluctant to make any firm forecasts for more than a week ahead, but does expect this week to be "dry and warm" throughout the Region of Murcia.
