ARCHIVED - Aguilas launches information campaign on jellyfish that frequent the coastal waters
Most of the jellyfish species found in Águilas are completely harmless and play and important role in the marine ecosystem
Over the next few days, the City Council of Águilas will display posters across the coast depicting the different kinds of jellyfish that can be found in the municipality’s waters.
The posters will include photos so that bathers can easily identify the different species and information on whether or not the particular jellyfish is dangerous.
The vast majority of jellyfish that frequent the Murcia coast are completely harmless to humans, such as the so called ‘fried egg’ species which has made an appearance in Águilas in recent weeks. This species also offers a refuge for several types of fry fish, so bathers are advised that under no circumstances should they be disturbed.
In the nearby Mar Menor, the discovery of large numbers Australian spotted jellyfish of caused some concern earlier this week. However, although it is considered an invasive species, protection groups have argued that its presence actually has several benefits for the ecosystem once the population can be adequately controlled.
It is precisely for this reason that the Águilas City Council has chosen to display the information posters, in order to make bathers aware of the role that jellyfish, in most cases totally harmless, play in the marine environment.
