Aguilas cordons off iconic ficus trees as safety measure
The town hall is worried about branches falling off the trees in these high winds and hurting people, and so have taped off the trees for the day
It’s a windy one today! The entire Region of Murcia is on yellow alert for strong winds of up to 70kmh as issued by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), and Águilas is taking precautionary measures to try to ensure that people stay safe while out and about in this blustery weather.
The town hall in Águilas has cordoned off the 100-year-old ficus trees in the Plaza de España – which are something of an emblem of the town centre – as a precaution against falling branches due to strong gusts of wind.
Local Councillor for Civil Protection, José Luis Moreno, has announced that the perimeter around the ficus trees will be taped off for the duration of the weather alert. People are advised not to walk near the area unless it is absolutely necessary.
The weather forecasts warn of the activation of a yellow alert lasting all day, until midnight tonight. From tomorrow, Wednesday February 28, there will be no weather alerts in place in Murcia.
