ARCHIVED - Air pollution levels prompt Murcia to offer free parking
The contamination level in Murcia has been climbing for five consecutive days

Murcia City Council has activated its level 3 protocol to deal with high levels of air pollution as values have been steadily rising since last Tuesday. To reduce contamination levels, a number of car parks in and around the city remain free throughout Monday October 24: Nueva Condomina, Thader Shopping Center, Palacio de los Deportes, Regional Auditorium, Carrefour Infante, Barriomar, 'La Molinera', Malecón and Ronda Norte.
The local administration has also asked residents with cars more than 10 years old to avoid “the interior area delimited by Ronda Oeste, Ronda Sur, Avenida de Los Dolores, Avenida Miguel Indurain, Reino de Murcia and Avenida Doctor Pedro Guillen.”
Level 3 is Murcia’s highest alert and has been initiated because the levels of harmful PM10 particles in the air have exceeded the 50 micrograms per cubic metre (µg/m³) barrier for five consecutive days. Despite a lower volume of traffic at the weekends, the arrival of an African air mass has again resulted in a high level of suspended particles.
The last time a level 3 alert was reached was in March 2021, when a huge cloud of Saharan dust literally turned the Murcian sky orange.
The situation is expected to improve considerably on Tuesday October 25 but for today, the calima is predicted to result in surface dust concentrations in the range of 20-200 mg/m3 for the entire southeast of Spain.
