Airbnb cracks down on bookings for New Year parties in Spanish rentals
The company has managed to block 92% of bookings for unauthorised parties in Spain
As cities around Spain prepare to welcome in 2024, accommodation rental portal Airbnb has announced it will employ the help of artificial intelligence to prevent customers from booking an apartment or house with the sole purpose of throwing an unauthorised New Year’s Eve bash.
This patented AI technology is being rolled out throughout Europe and is capable of spotting clients who are at risk of throwing festive parties in their rentals, specifically by detecting bookings around the 31st that are for one, two or three nights.
“In terms of how we use AI, we are focused on taking an approach that allows us to implement this technology in a way that benefits both hosts, guests and local neighborhoods. We trust that these measures will have a positive impact on the different communities where they will be applied this New Year's Eve,” Naba Banerjee, Director of Trust and Safety at Airbnb, explained.
Far from trying to put off genuine holidaymakers and travellers, the company wants to prevent the kind of noisy nuisance affair that could disturb the local community and end up in a property being damaged.
Guests booking accommodation over the New Year holiday through Airbnb will have to confirm that they understand that Airbnb prohibits unauthorised parties and that if they break this rule, they risk being suspended or banned from the platform.
Last year, this smart booking system prevented around 8,050 dodgy New Year’s Eve bookings in Spain. Among them, approximately 1,000 guests in Madrid, 1,000 in Barcelona, 480 in Valencia, 170 in Seville and 150 in Malaga. Likewise, since Airbnb first introduced prevention measures for New Year's Eve in 2020, the platform has observed a 92% decrease in incidents in Spain during these dates.
