ARCHIVED - Aldi investigates suppliers in Murcia over Mar Menor scandal
The chain sent a letter asking for suppliers in the Region of Murcia to prove that they have not played a part in the Mar Menor disaster
The German supermarket chain has sent a letter to its suppliers in the Campo de Cartagena regarding the Mar Menor scandal, proving that the eco-disaster has reached further afield than just the Region of Murcia.
In the letter, Aldi ask that their business associates in Cartagena provide proof that they have not contributed to the contamination of the lagoon. The company states that “the high groundwater level of the aquifer supposedly being responsible for the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater in the Mar Menor is not very credible”, insinuating that some companies and agricultural farmers knowingly allowed contaminated water to enter the lagoon.
The company goes on to state that they will continue to investigate their suppliers in the Region to find out if there is any involvement in this type of conduct. Aldi also reinforces their commitment to the environment and to sustainability in the letter.
As a show of support towards Aldi’s positive attitude, several environmental groups and platforms who support the Mar Menor will carry out a symbolic shop at Aldi supermarkets along the lagoon’s coast this Friday November 19.
In addition, the regional president, Fernando López Mirás, warned that if Aldi suppliers in the Region are found to be breaking the law, they will face judicial consequences as well as any commercial consequences imposed by the German chain.
The deadline set by Aldi was November 12 and the actions of this world-renowned brand have made waves in the Region, hopefully making way for other international chains to do the same and support the Mar Menor’s recovery.
