Alhama health centre to get more doctors and better health services
While the town’s health centre is being refurbished, new doctors and nurses will be hired to improve healthcare

The Health Centre in Alhama de Murcia is set to get a much-need renovation and more specialist staff to improve the level of healthcare in the town.
A few months ago, the Alhama doctors’ surgery was transferred to a temporary location so that work could begin to find solutions to improve the conditions of the health centre building.
As explained by the mayor of Alhama de Murcia, María Cánovas, and the Councillor for Health, Lali Salas, during the last 8 months, various meetings have been held with the Ministry of Health and area 1 of the Virgen de la Arrixaca University Hospital to address the needs at the municipality’s health centre. The mayor’s office has even sent an official record to make municipal land available to the Ministry of Health, a priority need for Alhama.
For starters, the primary care improvement strategy involves the incorporation of two additional GPs, a pediatrician, two nurses and a midwife for Alhama de Murcia. To be able to welcome these new staff as quickly as possible, an annex building will be made available as a temporary space for Pediatrics until the end of the year or the beginning of 2025, while the renovation works on the health centre are being finished off.
The Councillor for Health, Lali Salas, explained that “although the work to adapt the annex building was advanced, electrical problems arose that required new projects and hiring.”
However, it is expected that the temporary transfer of Pediatrics to the annex building will take place soon, freeing up space in the Health Centre for the incorporation of new professionals and services.

Mayor Cánovas emphasised that “the priority is to improve accessibility and working conditions for health professionals, as well as guarantee quality care for users.”
The mayor also added that “despite the urgency in addressing current needs, the commitment to work on the construction of the second Health Centre remains. The health authorities have been officially consulted about the characteristics required for the land intended for this end and your prompt response is expected”, thus reaffirming its commitment to local people, seeking immediate solutions while advancing long-term projects to improve the municipality’s health system.
