Alicante Xian Terracotta Army exhibition at MARQ Archaeology Museum wins design award
The exhibition ‘The Warriors of Xi’an’ at the MARQ has been awarded the Ephemeral Architecture Design Prize of the Comunitat de Valencia
The exhibition ‘The Legacy of the Qin and Han Dynasties, China. The Warriors of Xi’an’ exhibition at the Archaeological Museum of Alicante (MARQ) has added a new award to its list of accolades by winning gold at the Valencian Community’s Ephemeral Architecture Design Awards.
The exhibition was available to view at the MARQ Provincial Archaeological Museum between March 2023 and January 2024, showing the Terracotta Army of Xi’an, China, considered one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of the 20th century.
In just under a year, the exhibition received a total of 280,682 visitors, a record number that made it the most viewed exhibition ever for the museum, living up to the moniker of “one of the main cultural events of the year in Spain”.
The Design Association of the Valencian Community (ADCV) has highlighted the discourse of the exhibition. The award recognises creativity, innovation and excellence in ephemeral structures and, in the case of the exhibition of The Warriors of Xi’an, the jury “especially” valued the staging of Hall III, in which the terracotta figures could be seen displayed in futuristic circular glass capsules, with a mirrored roof and with music in the background that was composed specifically for the exhibition.
The exhibition was curated by Cambridge University professor Marcos Martinón-Torres and designed by the architect Ángel Rocamora, from Elche, who will be in charge of collecting the award from the ADCV.
