Do you know what type of driving licence you need to drive a campervan or tow a caravan in Spain?
If you're planning to drive a campervan or tow a caravan in Spain, it's as essential to understand the country's licensing requirements as it is the precise rules on where you can and cannot camp and park. The type of driving licence you need depends on the weight and specifications of your vehicle, as well as whether you're towing a trailer.
While many standard licences are sufficient for smaller motorhomes, larger models or heavier caravan setups may require additional categories or permits. Understanding these rules can help you avoid fines and ensure a hassle-free travel experience on Spain’s roads.
Here is a breakdown of the different licence categories and times when additional training or permits may be necessary, and information on how to get a driving licence in Spain.
Weight class will determine your licencing requirements
Generally speaking, if the Maximum Authorised Mass of a motorhome is less than 3,500 kg, that is, the total weight of the vehicle with the maximum load inside, a type B licence will be enough. In cases where the gross vehicle weight (GVW) load exceeds 3,500 kg, a type C licence will be required.
What if I own a caravan?
The take-home message would be the same legislation applies for both caravans and motorhomes owners seeking a type B license. For caravan owners, 3,500kg includes the towing vehicle and the trailer. If the 3,500kg threshold is exceeded, a type B96 licence is required, but be aware if 4,250kg is exceeded a type B+E licensing will be required.
What if my motorhome weighs more than 3,500 kg?
If your motorhome weighs more than 3,500kg, you will need to do a theory and practical test, but the requirements are very straightforward:
- You must be over 18 years old
- Have a class B driving licence
- After passing the psychotechnical exam, you will need to demonstrate your manoeuvring skills on an open and closed circuit
Respect the rules of the road
Unnecessary speeding fines can dampen a great trip so please remember to drive safely and stick to the speed guidelines below:
- The maximum speed allowed for a vehicle towing a caravan on motorways in Spain is 90kmh
- The speed limit on conventional roads, for any vehicle, is 80kmh
- The speed limit in urban areas is 50kmh

The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is the authority responsible for issuing driving licences in Spain. Offices are located throughout the country.
