The other main indicators of the pandemic continue to decline across Spain
The death toll from the coronavirus pandemic continues to rise with almost 600 more fatalities reported in the last week, but despite this, all of the vital indicators are in a controlled condition in Spain. On Friday September 16, ICU occupation had dropped to 1.7%, the lowest level since the health crisis began, and in no region are more than 5% of beds occupied by Covid patients.
Coronavirus infections
The Ministry of Health has registered 17,229 new coronavirus infections in Spain in the last week, which brings the total number of cases since the beginning of the pandemic to 13,384,876.
Cumulative incidence rate
The 14-day cumulative incidence rate in people over the age of 60 has only dipped very slightly since the last update to stand at 129.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (down from 130.17).
The 7-day incidence rate in citizens aged 60 or over has experienced an increase, rising from 61.45 cases to 62.70 on Friday September 16.
Those over 80 years of age have the highest level of risk of contagion, with an incidence of 193.69 cases, followed by septuagenarians (141.18), while the lowest level of transmission recorded is that of those in their sixties (88.28). All of these age groups have experienced a decline over the weekend.
There has been steady progress in reducing the incidence rate in the last week: the autonomous city of Ceuta maintains the best figure, plummeting from 26.36 cases per 100,000 inhabitants to just 19.77. It is followed by Navarra, with 67.00 cases and Andalucia (69.28).
Extremadura, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha have the highest rates in the country, exceeding 200 cases, but none exceeds 250, so the entire country is in a state of controlled circulation.
Hospitalisations and fatalities
There are currently 2,455 patients admitted to hospitals throughout Spain, a reduction of 231 since the last report, while 146 people are being treated for more serious conditions in the country’s ICUs (a considerable drop of 36).
These data mean that 1.9% of all hospital beds are occupied by Covid patients (down from 2.22% on the same day last week) while the occupancy rate in intensive care has fallen to just 1.7%.
A further 595 Covid-related fatalities were reported in Friday’s update, bringing the overall death toll in Spain to 113,725 people.
Vaccination data
As of September 14, 92.8% of the population over the age of 12 is fully vaccinated against Covid, which means that a total of 39,152,584 people have now received two doses.
So far, 39,264,979 have received at least one dose, 93.1% of the population over 12 years of age.
In addition, almost 26 million people, 54.8%, have had a booster dose.
