An exhibition, a walk along the jetty and auctions at the fishing port of Águilas

The current fishing port of Águilas dates back to 1884

The port of Águilas is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the Region of Murcia, and has been open in more or less its present form since 1884, when it was one of the sparks which led to the resurgence of trade in the town.

In addition, since June 2016 it has been home to a permanent exhibition illustrating the history of fishing in Águilas, a sector which for long periods of history has been one of the pillars of the local economy and to which the town is inextricably linked. The exhibition space features, photographs and touch screens and deals not only with fishing techniques over the centuries but also the species of fish most closely associated with Águilas, as well as the gastronomic traditions which have developed as a result.

The exhibition is open from 9.00 to 19.00 in the “Lonja” building, where visitors are also welcome during the auctions which are held daily at 17.00 to sell off the catches brought ashore. A lift is available for use by visitors of limited mobility and admission is free of charge.

Alternatively, the main jetty at the port is a popular destination for walkers in Águilas, with the “Paseo de los Pescadores” offering views out over the bay of Levante and the seafront of the town itself.

Plenty of parking spaces are available on the sea front itself, although of course these tend to be at a premium during the months of July and August!

Telephone of the Lonja: 968 410370.
