An Isolated Cold Storm hits Spain this weekend: Spain weather forecast Sept 14-17
Starting Friday, a strong stormy episode could hit practically anywhere in Spain
Weather alerts in place for Saturday September 16
Atmospheric instability will persist for the remainder of the week due to the passage of chilly air troughs so showers and locally strong storms are the order of the day all across Spain in the coming days. According to Meteored expert José Miguel Viñas, an Isolated Cold Storm, or BFA for its initials in Spanish, could hit over the weekend, creating a “particularly outstanding” stormy episode that will form between Friday and Saturday in the west of the country.
“On the one hand, DANA will have its reflection on the surface, forming the aforementioned BFA. DANA has a fairly prominent cold core, although it is somewhat shallower than the first one that affected us. The surface winds associated with the storm will contribute to transporting humid air to more areas, so there will surely be more regions that could be affected by very strong storms that will give rise to intense and long-lasting showers,” he clarified.
Weather forecast for Thursday September 14
For now, Thursday September 14 looks set to be a mostly cloudy day with some sunny spells in most parts, although several provinces have been issued with alerts for heavy rain and the Balearic Islands and the Levante coast can expect morning showers and storms. The rain will extend to inland Spain and the Mediterranean in the afternoon, where stormy intervals haven’t been ruled out.
The temperatures overall will change little compared to previous days, although the mercury will rise slightly in the northwest and along the Andalucian coast.
Yellow weather alert for heavy rain and/or storms: Andalucia, Aragón, Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Catalonia, Extremadura, Madrid, Valencian Community.
Weather forecast for Friday September 15
The approaching Atlantic low pressure system will begin to effect mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands in earnest on Friday September 15 and abundant cloudiness and widespread rain is forecast, often accompanied by storms. The bad weather is likely to hit the Mediterranean area early in the morning before moving from southwest to northeast throughout the day and particularly heavy rain is predicted for Valencia, Alicante and the Catalan coast.
Haze has been forecast in the southeast and the Balearic Islands so the showers will likely develop into muddy rain.
Night-time temperatures will climb in central Spain while the day will be notably cooler in most of the country.
Orange weather alert for heavy rain and/or storms: Catalonia, Valencian Community.
Yellow weather alert for heavy rain and/or storms: Andalucia, Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, Extremadura, Madrid, Region of Murcia.
Weather forecast for Saturday September 16
The instability will continue on Saturday September 16 although only Catalonia has been issued with a yellow weather alert for strong early morning storms. In the rest of the country the worst of the storms should be confined to western and inland areas but much of the southeast can expect rain earlier on.
Both day and night-time temperatures will continue to fall in southwestern and eastern Spain.
Weather forecast for Sunday September 17
The weather alert for Catalonia remains in place on Sunday September 17 but the unpredictable nature of the BFA means that rain could also be widespread and heavy across the country. However, on the southeast coast any showers should remain weak and isolated.
On Sunday night, the thermometers will fall in western Spain and climb in the eastern Mediterranean, where the daytime temperatures will also increase.
