AndalucÃa weekly weather forecast July 20-23: Storms threaten as the heat refuses to budge
Severe thunderstorm warnings join the heat alerts this week, with temperatures climbing even higher by Wednesday
The weekend saw various weather warnings and the mercury stubbornly refusing to drop across Andalucía, with Cádiz the only place offering anything close to relief. This week that pattern continues, and then some. The heat is if anything tightening its grip, and now there's a new element in the mix: the risk of severe thunderstorms in the northeast of the region, potentially accompanied by very strong gusts.Monday July 20

Dust is in suspension across the region, with the possibility of mud deposits where any rain falls. Cloud will build through the day in the eastern interior mountains, and isolated thunderstorms are possible in the afternoon, locally severe in the northeast. Heat warnings cover almost every province; Huelva is the one exception, though it's hardly cool there either. Winds are light and variable with occasional moderate westerly gusts. Cádiz sits under the heat alerts along with the rest, as the only area below 30°C.

Partly cloudy skies, mid- and high-level cloud, and another afternoon of thunderstorm risk in the eastern interior mountains, again potentially severe in the northeast. Dust remains, with mud deposits possible. Temperatures are unchanged or fractionally higher. Granada is firmly in the thick of it at 40°C, with Seville also uncomfortably hot at a marginally lower 38°C. Winds stay light and variable, with moderate westerly gusts at times. Warnings across most of Andalucía remain in place.
Wednesday July 22
Andalucía temperatures, Wednesday July 22This is the day to watch. Temperatures push even higher, with Córdoba reaching 43°C and both Granada and Jaén hitting 42°C. Mid-level and low-level cloud drift in along the Mediterranean coast, and there's again a chance of afternoon thunderstorms developing in the eastern mountains. Dust is present, and mud deposits are possible. The far east sees maximum temperatures fall slightly while the rest of the region heats up further. Westerly winds along the Atlantic coast, variable elsewhere. Almería, sitting at the hot eastern tip, will feel the full force of it.
Thursday July 23
Andalucía temperatures, Thursday July 23A slight easing, at least in terms of the dramatic spikes. Skies are partly cloudy or clear, with cloud building again in the eastern mountains during the day. Dust remains in suspension. Temperatures along the Mediterranean coast, including Málaga, see maximums rise, locally significantly in the far east, while the rest of the region holds more or less steady. Westerly winds pick up to moderate in the eastern third during the afternoon. Tarifa, at the tip of the peninsula, catches those Atlantic breezes as ever.
It's a relentless week. The storms add an element of unpredictability on top of the heat, and anyone in the northeast of the region should keep a close eye on the official warnings, particularly Monday through to Wednesday.
