ARCHIVED - Andalucia infections rise again: Covid update June 10
Andalucia’s Covid infections continue to rise, causing concerns that the planned easing of restrictions may be delayed again.
As the region continues to roll out its vaccination programme, Andalucia’s infections are still rising, while the number of deaths is also increasing.
On Thursday, June 10, Andalucia reported a total of 1,527 new cases and an accumulated incidence rate over the last 14 days of 189.8 cases per 100,000 people, according to the latest figures from the Andalucian Institute of Statistics (IECA).
The figures also reported a further 15 deaths, the second highest number so far this month.
By provinces, Seville had the most new positive cases with 454, followed by Malaga with 232, Cordoba with 182, Cadiz with 181, Granada with 167, Huelva with 144, Jaen with 124 and Almeria with 43.
Despite the rising infections, the number of people hospitalised with the virus in Andalucia has dropped for the second day to 745, 49 fewer than a week earlier. The number of patients in intensive care units has also fallen to 164, 36 fewer than the previous week.
The increase in cases has caused concern that plans to ease Covid restrictions will be delayed again after officials had planned to move to phase 2 of their de-escalation plan on May 31. The next meeting of the committee of experts which advises the government on health measures will now take place in mid-June ahead of the arrival of tourists this summer.
