ARCHIVED - Andalusia guarantees 1,200 places for Ukrainian refugees
The president of Andalucía has asked the Spanish government for a national plan to handle the crisis
The regional president of Andalucía, Juanma Moreno, confirmed on Tuesday March 8 that 1,200 places across the community’s eight provinces are available to welcome refugees fleeing from Ukraine. The leader has, however, indicated that he will demand from the Spanish government a comprehensive plan to coordinate all of the autonomous communities in receiving Ukrainians in addition to setting up a solidarity fund.
A similar measure was requested by the Region of Murcia this week, which has also opened up its border to a similar number of refugees, many of whom will be housed in public buildings but whose numbers will be increased with accommodation in hotels.
After the “brutal Russian invasion” of Ukraine, which has caused the departure of thousands of citizens from their home country, Mr Moreno has praised the collaboration between the regional governments in Spain.
"We want to help, cooperate and push in the same direction, we have offered health resources, and we have made human and material resources available to the Ukrainian Consulate in Malaga so that it can attend to the countless calls it has at the moment," he said.
On top of the 1,200 places currently on offer in Andalucía throughout a range of public venues, Mr Moreno is still seeking additional residences and shelters. However, according to the president, although families in the community are willing to open their doors to those in need, the damage caused by the invasion to the basic economy is already beginning to be felt in Spain.
“Andalusian and Spanish families are becoming poorer and for this reason we ask the Government to make important decisions in this matter,” he concluded.
