ARCHIVED - Andalusia welcomes the New Year with highest temperatures in 20 years
All Andalucía provinces will see the mercury exceed 20 degrees
While Christmas Day was a bit of a washout in much of Spain, Andalucía is preparing to wave goodbye to 2021 with weather more akin to the summer season than New Year’s Eve. In fact, if the predictions made by the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) bear fruit, the country could well experience the hottest December 31 in 20 years.
This week so far has been dry and bright with temperatures higher than usual for this time of year. In Malaga, the mercury topped out at 24 degrees on Wednesday 29 and the province just missed out on experiencing the warmest December day ever - this record was set at a toasty 24.6 degrees in 1998. Nevertheless, this is the third consecutive day the thermometers have reached 24 and the night-time temperatures remain at a comfortable 12 degrees.
The pleasant weather continues in Cordoba on Thursday with no sign of the rain of the previous week and temperatures of 21 degrees are expected. In Granada, the mercury will climb to a beach-worthy 25 degrees.
The good news is that New Year’s Eve in Andalucía is set to mirror the rest of Spain with maximum temperatures of 25 degrees, clear or lightly cloudy skies and gentle breezes.
While the warm weather certainly lends itself to both holidaymakers and residents making the most of the outdoors during the festive season, the news is less welcome to the farmers of Andalucía who have been battling to irrigate their crops all year. Large parts of southern Spain are currently at risk of desertification as a result of widespread drought and the lack of humidity caused by the ongoing change to the planet’s climate.
