ARCHIVED - Animal activists demand that dogs be allowed on ALL beaches in Spain
Demonstrators argue that dogs are members of the family and should be able to enjoy Spain’s shores

More than 200 animal lovers turned out in demonstration this week demanding that dogs be allowed on all of Spain’s beaches, all of the time, and without exception. The PACMA Animalist Party organised the mobilisation in A Coruña in Galicia on Monday August 15 under the slogan ‘Beaches for all.’
Cartagena has made some strides in this direction, recently announcing that two more popular beaches would be open to owners and their dogs, once the animals were kept under control and thoroughly cleaned up after. The move has been met with fierce opposition, however, and many residents have complained that permitting canines will further damage the Mar Menor.
The PACMA coordinator in the province of A Coruña, Manuela García, explained the rationale behind the group’s request: "We have come to demand free access for dogs to our beaches. We demand to be able to go down accompanied by our dogs, who are members of our family ".
She added that the main example of "this unfair situation" is the fact that "among the more than 3,000 beaches in Spain, just over 90 allow access with dogs."
At the beginning of this year, Spain’s Animal Protection Law declared that pets must be considered as “sentient beings” and no longer treated as “objects.” This does in fact fall in line with PACMA’s claims, since legally, companion animals are considered part of the family.
“There is no hygienic-sanitary report that links the presence of dogs on the beaches with any type of risk or problem for bathers,” Ms García argued, appealing to the government to allow owners and their dogs “go down (to the beach) without any time spot or space restrictions.”
It’s been a positive week for pooches overall, as Murcia City Council has revealed its decision to allow dogs accompanied by their owners walk off the leash in certain designated gardens and parks.
