The influx of migrants to the Region of Murcia continues with dozens of arrivals in recent days

The temporary accomodation for quarantining migrants at the Hotel Cenajo in the northwest of the Region of Murcia has been reopened following the latest influx of illegal migrants to the Costa Calida.

The hotel was first offered as a quarantine centre back in 2020 for people who had shared a boat with someone who tested positive for coronavirus, but it was emptied a few months ago when the arrival of migrants slowed. However, the regional media has reported that as of Saturday, July 24 around 30 migrants are currently being housed in the complex.

In recent years, the numbers of irregular migrants arriving on the Murcian coast have swelled, and authorities attribute the mild weather and calm seas of late to the most recent upsurge. The majority of migrants arriving in Murcia come from Algeria, and pay thousands of euro to organised criminal gangs to arrange their passage.

All migrants are given a PCR test once they arrive on the Escombreras dock, and those who test positive are immediately admitted to hospital whether they are displaying symptoms or not. Those who test negative then have to be isolated in the Cenajo.

On Friday 15 more migrants landed on the coast of Murcia and were quarantined at the hotel, bringing the total number up to 29. This number is expected to continue to rise in the coming days.

Before dawn on Saturday, the Armed Institute intercepted two boats carrying 29 people attempting to reach the coast at Cartagena. At the same time, two more boats with 32 men and one woman were intercepted en-route to beaches in the Lorca municipality. Government sources report that all of the migrants are of Algerian origin and appear to be in good health.
