ARCHIVED - April 8, celebration of the Virgen de los Dolores, the patron of Aguilas
A day fair and religious celebrations of one of the Patrons of Águilas
The Easter celebrations in Spain begin in earnest on the Friday before Good Friday, Viernes de los Dolores (Friday of Sorrows), and this coincides with the feast day of the patron of Águilas, the Virgen de los Dolores.
In consequence there are special events to commemorate the day, and in 2022 on April 8 these are back after their absence since 2019 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
A day fair will be open in Calle Balart, with a large marquee offering a chance to sample the local culinary specialities, and the rest of the program includes the following:
Thursday April 7
21.30: a free concert and the Serenata to the Virgen de los Dolores given by the Banda Titular del Patronato Musical Aguileño in the church of San José.
Friday April 8
11.00: Holy Mass in the church of San José.
12.00: Floral offering to the Patron featuring music from the Agrupación Musical Nuestra Señora Virgen de los Dolores.
12.30: The day fair opens.
19.30: Mass, followed by a procession through the streets.
After the celebration of these events, Águilas enters its Semana Santa celebrations with a host of processions as the town enjoys its Easter holidays and welcomes visitors from all over Spain and the rest of Europe!

Águilas boasts 28 kilometres of coastline, with many fine, sandy beaches, sheltered coves and unspoilt natural beaches. It is a great summer favourite with Spanish holidaymakers, so always has a superb programme of concerts and activities throughout the summer, as well as the biggest carnival in the Region of Murcia, 40 days before Semana Santa (Easter.)
Throughout the year it also has a number of museums and historical attractions, a castle with fabulous views overlooking the bay and several other points of interest, all of which make it an good place to visit for days out. Throughout the year the tourist office runs monthly guided tours and the route of the railways, which explores the railway history of the town.
The tourist information office is located in the Plaza de Antonio Cortijos, just a short walk from the sea front and Plaza de España, a cool, shaded space in which to enjoy a coffee.
