Archaeological excavations begin in Cerro Íbero de Alcantarilla
Experts have already found remains of pottery from the Ibero-Roman period at the site in the Murcia municipality

Alcantarilla Town Council has begun archaeological excavations at the Cerro Íbero site, located opposite the Museo de la Huerta, which contains sculptural and architectural fragments from the Iberian period and remains from the Bronze and Iron Ages.
The first excavations have already revealed several remains of pottery from the Ibero-Roman period and the collapse of a possible building structure, the age of which has yet to be determined.
This first phase of meticulous excavation is being carried by two archaeologists armed with a backhoe at six 3m2 plots over the next five weeks.
The probing is being done in collaboration with the Directorate General for Cultural Heritage.

Those 'digs' determined that the area was inhabited from the 7th century BC to the 6th century AD.
It's located next to the arches of the Aqueduct in the Cabezo del Agua Salá, and has been classified as an Asset of Cultural Interest and an archaeological site since 1990.
As early as 1794, art historian Canon Lozano wrote about the presence of Roman coins, mud from Sagunto and other antiquities in the area.
