Stargazers are in for an exceptionally rare treat this Wednesday night, July 13, when a dazzling Buck Supermoon will grace our skies, the largest moon that will be clearly visible from the Earth this year.

So named because it occurs when male deer typically grow their antlers before the mating season, this full moon will occur at perigee – that is, when it passes closest to Earth. Not all full moons are created equal, however; it is this very proximity to our planet that gives this Buck Moon its enormous appearance, thus making it a supermoon.

Wednesday’s Buck Supermoon is not to be missed, as it is one of only three that will occur in 2022. The Strawberry Moon already took place in June, and the Sturgeon Moon will appear in August.

This week, our satellite will be ‘only’ 357,418 kilometres from Earth making the moon appear almost 7% larger and brighter than usual and so the celestial event will be clearly visible with the naked eye.
