ARCHIVED - Cabin crew strikes begin to take their toll in Andalucia
20 flights have been delayed in Seville and Malaga as a result of Ryanair work stoppages
Ryanair cabin crew have been periodically striking all summer across Spain with little impact but the disruptions are beginning to be felt in Andalucia this week, and by 1pm on Monday August 22, a total of 20 flights operating at Seville and Malaga airports had already suffered delays.
In Malaga, 16 flights were late – six departures and 10 arrivals – while Seville got off a little easier with 4 delays (two departures and two arrivals).
Four cancellations were reported at Barcelona’s El Prat while a further two were axed at Palma de Mallorca. Barcelona has borne the brunt of the delays overall, with 17 on Monday, followed by Mallorca, with 15. Next up is Madrid-Barajas, with 10; Alicante and Santiago de Compostela, with six; Ibiza, with four, and Valencia and Girona, with one each.
The ongoing work stoppages, called as a result of a pay and working conditions dispute, are set to run until January 9 next year, from Monday to Thursday at Ryanair’s 10 Spanish bases.
The airline has come under fierce criticism for hiring staff from abroad to cover the shortfall, and the unions have accused Ryanair of unfairly guaranteeing minimum services of up to 85%. Cabin crew representatives have also demanded that the carrier immediately reinstate several staff who were sacked during the strikes in June and July.
Last week, Spanish budget airline Iberia Express confirmed that, despite ongoing talks over pay rates, its cabin crew had voted for 10 days of strike action beginning on August 17. Over at easyJet, pilots have also been striking in Spain but the disruption so far has been minimal.
