ARCHIVED - Cadiz shipyard joins the UK in contract to build Royal Navy vessels
The Andalucia base will construct three logistics vessels for the United Kingdom
Spanish company Navantia has landed a massive joint contract with the UK to build three logistics vessels for the Auxiliary Fleet of the Royal Navy. The steel blocks for these ships will be cut at the Purtos Real shipyard in Cádiz as part of the ‘Team Resolute’ project, which will get underway at the beginning of 2025.
'Team Resolute' is made up of the UK companies Harland & Wolff, BMT and Navantia UK, the British subsidiary of Navantia. The works, which will vastly improve the capabilities of the Navy fleet, will cost an estimated 1.6 billion pounds.
Britain’s Minister of Defence Ben Wallace explained that the three shipyards will be responsible for manufacturing the blocks that will make up the future fleet.
“'Team Resolute' will develop a modern, robust and thriving shipbuilding industry in Belfast that will support shipbuilding in the future. By collaborating with Navantia, one of the world's leading builders, we want to bring their knowledge and support and ensure that this is a long-term collaboration going into the future," he added.
Once completed, the three Fleet Solid Support (FSS) ships will be tasked with supplying goods and ammunition to Royal Navy vessels that have been deployed on missions. With each measuring the length of two football fields, they will be among the largest ships in the British fleet, behind only the 'Queen Elizabeth' class aircraft carriers.
Team Resolute will contribute more than 14 million hours of work in Spain and the United Kingdom.
“Navantia is proud to be part of this program that recognises our technological excellence and that will mean industrial activity, qualified jobs and prosperity for both countries”, president of the company, Ricardo Domínguez, said in a recent statement.
The Spanish company has reaffirmed its commitment to develop Defence projects with Britain and is exploring opportunities to participate in the manufacture of foundations and substations for offshore wind energy.
