ARCHIVED - Cities with the best tap water in Spain
The experts have rated the best and worst-tasting water in Spain
Drinking water and staying hydrated is vital for good health in Spain, particularly during the scorching summer months, with experts advising that adults should consume around 2 litres a day to replenish the water lost through sweating and other activities. The debate has raged for years about whether the tap water in Spain is safe to drink, with supermarkets cashing in on nervous residents purchasing bottled water by the gallon.
Now, the Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) has insisted that “the best thing is to drink tap water” as it is far cheaper, of exceptional quality and is better for the environment as it produces no plastic waste. However, the OCU has acknowledged that in some parts of Spain the tap water doesn’t taste as good, and this accounts for the high consumption of bottled water.
Best Spanish tap water
After analysing the tap water in more than 60 municipalities, the OCU has confirmed that in 19 of them the quality is excellent and in 36 it is good. This means that most of the cities analysed have a quality that is very suitable for consumption.
The winners are Burgos, San Sebastián and Las Palmas, cities in which the tap water contains very few minerals and very little lime, contributing to its good taste, according to the OCU.
The worst tap water
If there is a best, there has to be worst and this ignominous title goes to Palma de Mallorca, Huelva, Barcelona and Ciudad Real. These municipalities have tap water that in some cases contains high levels of harmful substances, while the hygiene quality and presence of contaminants also served to bring the score down.
