ARCHIVED - Compulsory insurance for electric scooters in Spain
The DGT is also planning on introducing minimum quality standards for scooters in Spain
The general director of traffic, Pete Navarro, announced on Wednesday September 22 that he is in favour of imposing compulsory insurance for electric scooters in Spain, as has already been done in France.
“It seems logical and reasonable to me, it’s on the agenda,” Mr Navarro said at a meeting organised by Línea Directa in honour of European Mobility Week. The minister highlighted the concerns of the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) over the high number of scooters being ridden on pavements, despite the fact that this is expressly forbidden in Spain. He criticised the autonomous communities for not giving the matter “the importance it deserves” by ignoring the infractions rather than dishing out the appropriate fines.
Such is the concern that the DGT will launch a new campaign in November reminding electric scooter users that riding on the pavement is prohibited, and it is hoped that the drive will encourage regional authorities to follow through on the matter.
Mr Navarro also confirmed that a quality certificate for scooters is also in the pipeline, a document which will prevent vehicles that do not meet the minimum quality standards from entering the Spanish market.
“We do not want bad Chinese scooters,” the minister stressed.
