ARCHIVED - Congress in Spain approves the use of medicinal cannabis
The drug will be available in pharmacies in Spain within six months
The Congress of Deputies in Spain has given the green light to regulating medicinal cannabis for therapeutic purposes and the new treatment should be available from hospital and community pharmacies in the coming months.
The drug will comprise standardised cannabis extracts or preparations and will be dispensed “from the pharmacy network of the health system, preferably in hospital pharmacies and exploring the alternative of community pharmacies that qualify.”
The door has also been left open to using cannabis flower in the future which is already done in several other European countries.
The subcommittee has produced a document which details the kinds of ailments that could benefit from medicinal cannabis, including “spasticity in patients with multiple sclerosis, some forms of epilepsy, chemotherapy-related nausea and vomiting, endometriosis, cancer pain, and chronic non-cancer pain (including neuropathic pain)”.
The experts have also suggested that this list could be expanded “when the studies provide consistent indications,” since the available scientific evidence for its effectiveness in treating other conditions is still extremely limited.
To ensure the smooth roll-out of medicinal cannabis, the subcommittee has requested that specialised training be provided for practitioners tasked with prescribing the drug, and it has also suggested implementing a centralised registry of patients who are undergoing the treatment, although this notion has been met with some resistance.
These records can be the basis for evaluating the results obtained with treatment in different patient profiles, and thus progressively improve knowledge about the drug and ultimately benefit patients,” the subcommittee claims.
