ARCHIVED - Covera airport resumes flights with Morocco
Flights from Murcia to Casablanca and Oujda reopen after a two-month closure
On Monday February 8, Murcia’s Corvera airport resumed its two air connections with Morocco after the country closed its airspace last November in an attempt to stem the spread of the Omicron variant.
On its website, Air Arabia Maroc announced that it will once again be operating flights between the Region and Casablanca and Oujda, which is located near the border with Algeria.
Morocco has resumed all international flights this week amid strict sanitary measures after refusing to open its airspace to Spain before Christmas, accusing the Spanish government of failing to carry out the necessary safety checks on passengers.
The loss of flights with Morocco and the restrictions imposed over the past year on travellers from other countries have caused a 30% drop in airport activity compared to 2020, according to data provided by Aena. And compared to 2019, Corvera barely reached a quarter of its pre-pandemic passenger levels.
During 2021, a total of 283,436 travellers passed through Murcia’s airport.
The Region has high hopes for a bumper spring-summer season, however, with Corvera offering flights to 22 cities in five countries from the end of March.
Within Spain, passengers can fly from Murcia to Asturias, Santander, Menorca, Palma de Mallorca and the Canary Islands. The remaining 17 routes will connect Corvera with the United Kingdom, Norway, Belgium and Morocco.
