ARCHIVED - Covid tests required for travel from Spain to Ireland
Those travelling to Ireland from Spain for Christmas will now have to fork out for a PCR or antigen test
Ireland joins a long list of countries that are upping the ante following the emergence of the South African strain of coronavirus, the Omicron variant. It has been announced that people travelling to Ireland from Spain, or any other country, will require a negative Covid test from Friday December 3, regardless of whether or not they have been double vaccinated.
Travellers arriving at Irish ferry ports and airports will have to present either a professional antigen test taken a maximum of 48 hours prior to arrival or a PCR test taken up to 72 hours before. This new measure includes passengers arriving from Britain, but at the moment, there is no requirement for fully vaccinated passengers to be tested before returning to Spain from the Emerald Isle.
The new measure will hit the pockets of many people hoping to travel from Spain to Ireland for Christmas at a time when everyone is already feeling the pinch from escalating electricity, fuel and grocery prices.
The rule will remain in place for two weeks initially.
While on his way to the deciding Cabinet meeting, Taoiseach Micheál Martin confirmed that while there has been a noted decrease in the number of coronavirus infections in recent days, the Omicron variant is a potential cause for concern. He concluded that, while "we do have to allow the science to inform us in terms of how infectious it is, how virulent it is and the impact of vaccines on it", the country has to take precautionary measures until more is known.
While Spain hasn’t imposed any restrictions on people arriving from Ireland, the country has suspended flights from South African and Botswana and from today, passengers coming from the UK will have to present a valid Covid passport to be allowed entry.
