Spain might still be reeling from the news that food prices are set to take another massive price hike in the coming weeks but there is a silver lining, as after months of ups and downs, fuel has finally started to behave itself and return to normal.

In the last 7 days, the price of diesel has dropped by 1.32% to its lowest level since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and although petrol has been proving to be a little more resistant to recovery, it too has experienced the second largest decline so far this year.

At the moment, a litre of super 95 will set you back 1.635 euros while diesel today costs just 1.571 euros per litre, low, low prices that haven’t been seen in quite some time. And diesel continues to widen the gap from unleaded, against which it has been the cheapest option for six weeks now.

According to the data published by the European Union Oil Bulletin on Thursday March 23, which includes the average price registered in more than 11,400 Spanish service stations between March 14 and 20, filling a regular 50-liter tank of diesel costs 78.55 euros, while the cost amounts to 81.75 euros in the case of petrol.

Diesel is certainly the star of the show in Spain, having dropped more than 5% in price since the end of last year, when the 20-cent discount was still in place.

Furthermore, both fuels are still far cheaper in Spain than in the rest of the EU, where the average stands at 1.669 euros per litre for diesel and 1.711 for petrol.

Looking at the likes of France, Germany and Italy, the difference is even more pronounced: in these nearby countries, diesel prices range between 1.704 and 1.818 euros while the gap for petrol is between 1.796 and 1.921 euros per litre.
