ARCHIVED - Disgruntled employee guns down four people in Tarragona, near Barcelona
Three staff members and a police officer were seriously injured in the Catalonia shooting
Marin Egeu Sabau, a 45-year-old Romanian resident of Alcover near the city of Tarragona, in Catalonia stormed into the Securitas office where he had up until recently worked and opened fire on his colleagues. One, the manager, was critically injured while the two other staff members are in a serious condition.
Just days before, the gunman had sent an email to several people at the Barcelona company wishing them a “happy holiday, bastards”, and accusing Securitas of being “thieves” and “racists”, leading investigators to believe that the attack may have been revenge for being fired.
After the shooting, Mr Sabau fled the scene in a grey Citroen, and although the Mossos d’Esquadra set up parameter closures the gunman was able to slip through the net and make his way towards Falset. Just outside the city of Reus the man came across a checkpoint and shot a police officer; the agent is understood to be in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
Law enforcement finally caught up with the fugitive after he holed himself up in a farmhouse 20 kilometres outside Tarragona where he remained barricaded for several hours, heavily armed and wearing a bulletproof vest. Officers surrounded the property and after the gunman opened fire, members of the Catalan police force's GEI special intervention team rushed in to neutralise the suspect. He was seriously injured by gunshot wounds and rushed to the Bellvitge Hospital near Barcelona in a critical condition.
In a statement, the chief commissioner of Tarragona indicated that the gunman was “a very dangerous person, both because of the number of weapons he carried – five, although this has not been confirmed – and because of the way he acted” towards the police.
