ARCHIVED - Dispute between Catalonia and Aragon threatens 2030 Winter Olympics in Spain
Both Spanish communities want to take the lead in hosting the Games
A long-standing quarrel between the regional governments of Catalonia and Aragón is threatening the 2030 Winter Olympics in Spain, with each community vying to be named as the main host for the games.
Catalonia has thrown its hat in the ring for the top spot by suggesting that Aragón merely be a “collaborator”, while the Aragonese government has steadfastly refused to take a “subordinate” role and insists that anything less than 50/50 management would be an insult.
The plan so far is to hold part of the Winter Olympics in the Catalan Pyrenees and another in Aragón, with certain disciplines taking place in Barcelona.
The feud between the regions has historical roots, with nationalism featuring heavily as Catalonia refuses to acknowledge the Crown of Aragón. More recently, the government heads waged a long legal battle over the ownership of important works of Romanesque art, with a judge ordering the Catalan executive to return several pieces which had originally belonged to the Huesca monastery of Sijena. Despite the somewhat positive outcome for Aragón, the most important painting – the murals of Sijena – remains in Catalonia.
From the start, Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has referred to the 2030 Games as a national project in which the two communities must work on an “equal footing”, but with tensions continuing to run high, an agreement doesn’t appear to be on the horizon any time soon.
