ARCHIVED - Effigy of Real Madrid player hanging from bridge sparks investigation ahead of Copa del Rey derby
The doll bearing a Vinicius Jr. shirt was filmed hanging beneath a banner that read ‘Madrid hates Real’
A blow-up doll was found hanging from a bridge wearing the jersey of Real Madrid player Vinicius Jr. in the Spanish capital this morning, ahead of the Copa del Rey quarter-final derby between Real Madrid and Atlético de Madrid at 9pm Spanish time tonight.
The effigy was hung beneath a banner reading ‘Madrid hates Real’ in Spanish, and has been seen as a violent and possibly racist attack on the star Real Madrid player from Brazil.
Se han sobrepasado todos los límites con Vinícius, esto lo hace una afición perdedora, una afición repugnante y un club sin valores.

Atlético de Madrid have roundly criticised the action, which it is thought is the work of a group of ultras from among their fans. Atlético described the scenes as “repugnant and inadmissible and shame society”.
“In view of the image that appeared today in various media in which a message of hatred was launched in the hours before the match tonight against Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Copa de S.M. el Rey, Club Atlético de Madrid communicates that such acts are absolutely repugnant and inadmissible and shame society,” read a statement from the club.
“Our condemnation of any act that attacks the dignity of persons or institutions is categorical and unreserved.”
Fans from both sides have flooded social media with messages of support bearing the hashtag #TodosSomosVini (WeAreAllVini) and #NoALaViolencia (NoToViolence).
Representatives from La Liga say they will try to wor with police to pinpoint the people responsible: “La liga strongly condemns acts of hatred and intimidation against Vinicius Jr. Intolerance and violence have no place in our sport. La Liga will, as in the past, will press for an investigation into the matter by relevant state security forces and bodies seeking convictions for those responsible and requesting the most severe sentences.”
