ARCHIVED - Expert tips for staying cool in extreme heat as temperatures soar in Murcia
Murcia was the hottest province in Spain last week, sizzling in temperatures in excess of 39ºC at the weekend
Temperatures have soared across the Region of Murcia, which proved to be the hottest province in Spain at the start of last week, rounding off the weekend with highs of 39ºC in parts, prompting a heat warning and a list of recommendations on how to stay safe in extreme conditions.
The regional Ministry of Health announced on Monday mornnig, May 23, that it has activated the National Plan of Preventive Actions for the Effects of Excessive Temperatures on Health as the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) forecasts highs of between 32 and 34ºC in the Murcia region today.
And Águilas Town Hall's health department has followed this up with tips on staying cool.
Excessive heat can alter vital functions when the body is unable to compensate for variations in body temperature and cause health problems such as cramps, dehydration, sunstroke or heat stroke. So it is essential to take the following precautions as temperatures rise:
- Whenever possible, avoid going out of the house between 12 noon and 6pm
- Drink plenty of fluids, even if you don't feel thirsty and regardless of your physical activity
- Reduce physical activity and outdoor sports in the middle of the day
- Eat light meals
- Stay in air-conditioned or shaded areas as much as possible
- Wear light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing made of natural fabrics, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen
- Keep food in the refrigerator
- When parking your car, do not leave children, elderly people or pets inside with the windows closed
- Pay special attention to people at higher risk (children, the elderly, pregnant women and the chronically ill)
