ARCHIVED - Foreigners residing in the Murcia Region increased by 8 per cent
The Murcia Region increased five points more than the Spanish national average
Even with the health crisis of the past two years, the Region of Murcia continues to draw foreigners looking to move to Spain, hardly a surprise given the community’s abundant sunshine, one of the many reasons it has been voted the happiest place in Spain.
In fact, the number of resident foreign citizens grew an impressive 8.3% last year, far more than the Spanish national average which increased by just 3.6%, although this boost does take the country’s figure over six million for the first time (6,007,553).
The last count of December 31 2021 puts the number of foreigners residing in Murcia at 235,411, up from 217,257 the previous year, according to the Ministry of Inclusion, Social Services and Migration.
51.2% of foreign citizens residing in the Region are men, with Moroccans taking the lead with 88,893 people, almost a third of all foreigners. Far behind is Ecuador (23,000), followed by the British (22,015), Romanians (18,564), Bulgarians (9,258), Bolivians (7,570), Ukrainians (6,738), the Chinese (4,409) and Colombians (4,157).
In Spain as a whole, the Romanian community is the one with the greatest presence, comprising 1,093,231 residents.
