ARCHIVED - Gang of thieves targets Carrefour Express supermarkets in Granada province
The thieves have broken into three supermarkets in Granada and Iznalloz in a fortnight, making off with more than 14,000 euros.
Carrefour Express owners across Granada province are becoming concerned as thieves have been targeting the chain over the last couple of weeks. A gang is believed to be focusing on the supermarkets as they close late in the evenings and open at the weekends, meaning there is always likely to be cash in the tills.
The break-ins began on 29 March, when two hooded thieves dressed in black broke a window to get into a supermarket in Iznalloz at 2 am. In just a couple of minutes, the pair had torn out and made off with the till, containing about 4,000 euros in cash. An hour later, the same two thieves (or at least two people in identical attire) broke their way into another Carrefour Express on Calle San Juan de Dios in Granada, where they also grabbed the till, containing a similar amount of cash, and ran.
The third attack on a supermarket in the chain happened this Monday night, 12 April, with a pair again dressed in black and wearing hoods breaking into the store on Avenida de Barcelona in Granada, grabbing 6,000 euros and escaping in a car that was waiting outside.
The National Police and Guardia Civil are on the gang's trail, and with plenty of evidence in the form of CCTV recordings, fingerprints and other information; they hope to catch the thieves before they attack again but have warned shop owners to take extra precautions in the meantime.
