ARCHIVED - Ireland delays Covid test requirement for arrivals
Passengers travelling from Spain to Ireland won’t have to show a negative test until Sunday December 5
New travel rules announced on Tuesday November 30 requiring all travellers arriving in Ireland to show a negative coronavirus test have been “delayed” and will not now come into effect until Sunday December 5.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee confirmed that there had been “some slight delay” in signing off on the regulations but insisted that the move was not intentional.
Sinn Fein's Martin Ferris has slammed the government’s failure to communicate the change in a timely fashion, since many people planning to travel from Spain and other European countries will already have booked their tests at a considerable expense.
Originally intended to be rolled out at midnight, the new measure requires all vaccinated or recovered passengers travelling to Ireland to provide proof of a negative PCR test taken no later than 72 hours prior to arrival, or an antigen test taken 48 hours before.
According to reports, some Ryanair customers received a message informing them that the test wouldn’t be required for another 48 hours, but for many this was simply too late as they had already forked out for documentation they don’t need.
There is still much confusion over the new travel rules, with airlines wondering who is responsible for checking the test results and passengers unsure of the sanctions they face if caught travelling without a negative result.
