ARCHIVED - Latest wave of Spanish Ryanair strikes get underway with minimal fuss
The airline has predicted “minimal, if any disruption” in Spain due to the cabin crew stoppages
With more than 3,000 daily flights, Ryanair bosses have previously claimed that less than 1% of their journeys would be affected by the ongoing cabin crew strikes in Spain. Just 10 cancellations were planned on Monday August 8, the first day of this latest round of work stoppages, and the airline is confident that the disruption “will be minimal, if there is any, in the operations scheduled for the coming months.”
The new industrial action will run until January 7, consisting of 24-hour work stoppages, Monday through Thursday, weekly. USO and Sitcpla, the unions representing Ryanair cabin crew, claim that the carrier "has not shown the slightest attempt” to negotiate with them, but has publicly stated its refusal to engage in any dialogue with the representatives chosen by its staff.
On the second day of strike action, Tuesday August 9, 27 delays and two cancellations were reported before 9am. The axed flights were between Barcelona airport and London-Stansted while the majority of the delays hit Malaga (10), followed by Barcelona and Palma de Mallorca, with four each.
Ryanair suffered a major embarrassment last week for very different reasons when a man managed to sneak on board a Palma flight bound for Manchester without any ticket. According to other passengers, the stow-away hid on the bridge when his plane landed, only to slip back on the aircraft when no-one was looking. His motives are unclear but luckily the pilot spotted the extra body on his flight manifesto before taking off, and the man was arrested.
