ARCHIVED - Mallorca protest platform rails against largest cruise ship in the world
The Spanish island has limits on how many cruise tourists can disembark but these are being broken, says the platform
A Platform in Mallorca that is against mega-cruise ships has slammed the visit of the largest cruise ship in the world, the ‘Wonder of the Seas’, after it arrived in Palma de Mallorca this week fresh from Cartagena.
In a statement, the platform has claimed that the arrival of the cruise ship, as well as several other cruises that are docking in Palma, “will once again generate chaos and saturation of the streets of the historic centre of Palma”.
Their main gripe is that the cruise operators are flagrantly flouting rules which limit the number of cruise passengers allowed into the city.
“For three years we have been demanding that this type of tourism, which the city can no longer bear, be brought to a halt, but just when the season begins we see that the agreements are systematically breached,” they continued.
Cruises are a popular form of travel to Spain and bring in a lot of income for the port cities where the dock, but some find them unsightly and complain that the local community cannot cope with such an influx of people.
