ARCHIVED - Masks will be compulsory in Murcia classrooms for children over 6
The Ministry of Education has insisted that mask-wearing at school is non-negotiable despite opposition from parents
Education officials reiterated on Monday, August 23 that all children over the age of six years, along with their teachers, will have to wear face masks while in the classroom, regardless of whether they are socially distanced or in their ‘bubbles’. While no proof of vaccinations of minors will be required by the schools in the Region, the Ministry of Education has guaranteed its full support to educators in enforcing the mask rule.
As the start of the school term draws near, a group known as Parents for Truth in the Region has revealed on social media that it intends to send its children to school on the first day of classes without the mandatory face coverings and intends to take legal action if they are denied entry. The group, which is also critical of the vaccination of minors, has already held a protest rally on August 14.
The situation is not at all straightforward, unfortunately, as the president of the Association of Primary Directors of the Region, Mariola Sanz, has pointed out that one of the concerns is whether the children can actually be refused entry, and thus denied their legal right to an education.
To clarify this situation, among others, the Association will meet with the general director of Human Resources, Educational Planning and Evaluation on September 3 ahead of the start of term.
