ARCHIVED - Mercadona supermarkets move to summer opening hours across Spain
Most stores in Spain will remain open later and some now open on Sundays
Countless holidaymakers have been frustrated when arriving in Spain late at night or at the weekend, only to find that the supermarkets are closed. Traditionally, Mercadona stores don’t open on Sundays or bank holidays throughout the year and their normal business hours are between 9am and 9.30pm.
However, with the summer season up and running the popular chain has extended its opening hours, most notably in the popular tourist areas and along the coast.

Between June 27 and August 29, Mercadona supermarkets will open from 9am to 10pm, Monday to Saturday, without any breaks.
In addition, as a special summer measure, stores situated in holiday hotspots will also open on Sundays, between 9am and 3pm. Some of the more touristy areas that have the extra weekend shopping day include Alicante, Chiclana de la Frontera, Benalmádena or Cubelles, among many others.
The company has advised that these hours vary from town to town so it’s always advisable to check the opening times on the Mercadona website to be sure.
