ARCHIVED - Missing Picasso painting turns up for auction in Spain
The drawing by the Málaga artist disappeared almost 100 years ago
The Subarna House in Barcelona has announced that on October 7 it will auction an original and signed drawing by Pablo Ruiz Picasso, believed to have been created between 1900 and 1903. The piece, a preparatory work for the famous painting ‘The blind man’s food’ currently on display at the MET in New York, hasn’t been seen for almost 100 years and was thought lost by many art historians. The drawing is expected to fetch around 100,000 euros at auction.
The piece recently turned up in the possession of a local man who also claims to have an original painting by the Málaga artist, and subsequent studies of the drawing have revealed that it was most likely created in Tiana in Barcelona during Picasso’s famous ‘blue period’ in 1903, when he was staying with the Reventós family.
The drawing’s value is increased by the fact that it is one of the few remaining pieces created in Barcelona during this stage of his career.
This will be the first time that the work has been shown to the public in colour, with Picasso's handwritten signature.
