ARCHIVED - Murcia opposition party demands referendum to ban bullfighting in the capital
Calls intensify for a popular consultation on whether to finally ban bullfighting at the fair in Murcia city
The political party Podemos, opposition to the PSOE-Cs coalition in the Ayuntamiento de Murcia City Council, have called for a citizen referendum on whether or not to ban bullfighting in the city, in response to the high-profile killing of a man by a bull on Monday.
“The death of a bullfighter during the celebration of a bullfight in the Plaza de la Condomina has not been enough for the organisers or the Murcia City Council to consider cancelling the fair,” said Podemos. The decision to continue “as if nothing had happened” with more bullfights just 24 hours later, they say, is “inhuman and brutal”, a view shared by Dutch activist Peter Jansen, who interrupted the bullfight on Tuesday to hold up a sign saying “Violence against animals is not culture”.
Podemos have recommended that there be a popular referendum for the residents of Murcia to decide for themselves whether they want to support a fair where, each year, “30 animals are tortured to death”.
“Perhaps it is time to consider whether this is necessary,” they said. “This tragedy must be a turning point,”
In addition, the party will campaign for a ‘no’ vote in any such referendum and has expressed opposition to an event “which is being attended by fewer and fewer people and which is only supported thanks to public money”.
