ARCHIVED - New passport rules for Brits in Spain post-Brexit
UK nationals now need 6 months left on their passport to visit Spain
Visitors to Spain from the UK, including non-residents who own a second home in Spain, are now required to have at least 6 months left on their passport before travelling.
The new passport rules come following a change to the laws governing travel status between Spain and the United Kingdom after Brexit. Other changes made recently include the requirement for Brits to show a UK sticker on their cars when driving in Spain.
Brits are now advised to make sure their passport is valid for at least another 6 months from the day they travel, so they can safely travel in Europe for up to 3 months and meet the requirement by most European countries to have at least 3 months left on their passport on the day after they leave.
In addition, on the day after leaving the passport must also be less than 10 years old. Those who renewed their passports before the previous one expired may have had the extra months added to the expiry date, but these might not count towards the passport validity now required by Spanish border control.
This does not apply to Spanish residents. British citizens who are legally resident in Spain do not need any extra months on their passport to enter or exit the country.
Travellers are advised to check UK government guidelines about passport renewal before travelling.
