ARCHIVED - Outrage as minors vandalising Canary Island protected natural area goes viral on social media
The youngsters were photographed writing their names on the Montaña Amarilla in La Graciosa
Standing at an impressive 172 metres high, the Montaña Amarilla, or Yellow Mountain, on the Canary Island of La Graciosa is one of four volcanic groups which is a favoured protected natural spot for visitors. Situated in the small cove of Playa de la Cocina, the yellow, ochre and reddish-brown of the rock contrasts brilliantly with the crystalline water surrounding it.
It is no surprise, then, that photos circulated by a stunned onlooker on social media of three young people daubing their names of the mountain side caused outrage, with many calling for the children to be fined to dissuade this kind of behaviour. Even more surprising is the fact that the Twitter poster reported that a group of adults was cheering the youngsters on as they defaced the protected rock.

The names of Gera, Jaime and Nico, whose faces were blacked out of the photo as they are minors, have been scrawled in huge lettering on the walls. By publishing the pictures, which have now gone viral, the poster, Natacha Llarena, said that she only wanted to achieve one objective: “report something that threatens one of our most precious assets: our natural heritage.”
