ARCHIVED - Price of butane gas cylinders in Spain reaches record high
The cost of the fuel in Spain has risen by almost six euros since September 2020
The price of bottled butane gas in Spain will reach record levels on Tuesday January 18, as the cost of a 12.5kg cylinder soars to 17.75 euros, an increase of almost six euros since September 2020.
The Organisation of Consumers and Users (OCU) is warning that the hike will prove “painful” for many households reliant on butane for heating and hot water where there are no alternatives.
On November 16, 2021, the price of the canisters tose to 16.92 euros, representing an all-time high in six years. But today, the cost will surpass the previous record of 17.50 reached between the spring of 2013 and beginning of 2015 with an 84 cent (4.91%) increase.
This particular hike only applies to the traditional 12.5kg butane cylinder, which weighs more than nine kilograms empty, according to the OCU. Those with a tare weight of less than nine kilos or without a load of between eight and 20 kilos, which account for 22% of the market, have had a deregulated price for years so tend to cost more than this regulated price.
As such, the consumers’ organisation is recommending that families experiencing financial difficulties check whether they are entitled to the ‘bono social eléctrico’, a grant to help with the cost of energy which includes aid of between 29 and 124 euros per year, regardless of the energy source used.
OCU estimates that around 1.2 million households are not benefiting from this subsidy even though they meet the criteria, and is calling on the government to promote the automatic granting of the bono social eléctrico to all potential beneficiaries.
