ARCHIVED - Spain falls behind emissions target for Paris Agreement
Spain still ranks as one of the top countries for reducing emissions
Despite the fact that Spain is one of the countries that has decreased its carbon emissions the most in recent years, a new report has shown that the country will need to intensify its efforts and double the reduction in order to meet the obligations of the 2015 Paris Agreement.
The latest data produced by the Net Zero Economy Index show that, just days before the start of the much-anticipated Climate Summit, Spain has managed to reduce the figure by 7.9%. However, this decrease is still “insufficient” to reach the goal of limiting the increase in the Earth’s temperature to 1.5 degrees.
According to Pablo Bascones who is responsible for Sustainability and Climate Change at consulting firm PwC who commissioned the study, the coronavirus pandemic made a huge impact, with the stoppage of a large amount of industry and restrictions in travel vastly reducing the amount of fossil fuels consumed in Spain. In addition, there has been a notable increase in the focus on renewable and hydroelectric energy in recent months.
While Spain is making good strides against climate change, the experts have claimed that that wider global situation is “more worrying” given that during the health crisis in 2020, when the planet virtually came to a standstill, the world economy only reduced its carbon emissions by 2.5%; to comply with the Paris Agreement, that figure would need to rise to 12.9%.
And the outlook is not that positive, according to Mr Bascones, who has stressed that to date, only a tiny number of countries have managed to get to double-digit levels of decarbonisation.
