ARCHIVED - Spain studies giving free condoms to under 25s
Spain will follow in the footsteps of France which already offers free contraception
The Ministry of Equality in Spain is considering offering free contraception, such as the birth control pill and condoms, to people under the age of 25, as is currently being done in France, a very “inspiring” country, according to the Secretary of State for Equality and against Gender Violence, Angela Rodríguez.
The minister insisted this week that the issue of free contraceptives will form a vital part of the discussions around the battery of measures for the reform of the abortion law.
Ms Rodríguez is determined to introduce the measure in Spain, but she insists that there must be “a little co-responsibility”, since, in her opinion, it is usually women who are expected to look after contraception and it is still one of the issues where a large “gender gap” exists.
The minister believes that an agreement on the reform of the abortion law is imminent given that the text has been “well worked out” and is a solid proposal which responds to the demands of the people.
