ARCHIVED - Spain unveils plans for controversial new gender parity law
The new bill aims to force big business and political parties to have equal representation of men and women
This Wednesday March 8 is International Women’s Day 2023, an occasion observed globally to celebrate equality between the sexes, and many cities and towns across Spain are preparing marches and events to mark the day.
With recent political developments in Spain, though, it promises to be a tense Women’s Day this year.
The government coalition team is currently at loggerheads over the possible reform of the ‘Only Yes is Yes’ (Solo Sí es Sí) sexual equality law, which has led to more than 700 reductions in sentences for sexual offenders, and the feminist movement is somewhat divided over the new Trans law too.
It is against this backdrop that the government has unveiled its new draft bill for the “Parity law”, which aims to ensure equal representation of both sexes in decision-making bodies, which includes the Council of Ministers itself, and the managing boards of large companies, which must be formed by at least 40% of women.
The law includes such proposals as obligatory electoral lists for political parties which alternate positions between men and women.
The aim of this law, announced President Pedro Sánchez, is to guarantee gender parity regardless of the political ideology of whoever governs. However, it is being criticised by his own backbenchers for being poorly thought-out and not ambitious enough, and the opposition parties claim it is a political stunt to take the heat off of other high-profile government scandals.
In any case, the purpose of International Women’s Day is to call for unity among feminists of all stripes to stamp out discrimination based on sex and gender, and the spirit of that is something we can all get behind.
